The Best Underwater Scooter 2021

April 22, 2021 By James Anderson Leave a Comment

Okay, normally we’d be telling you what to buy, but this time we’re going to start by telling you what not to buy.

Avoid the Yamaha Seascooter Range

We see far too many people recommending these Yamaha-licensed scooters without doing their research. The lead-acid batteries in these just don’t last more than a few months at best, and they rapidly degrade from the get-go.

We want to make sure you choose a quality product, so until the manufacturer (who isn’t Yamaha, as you can see below) of this Yamaha-licensed product range completely overhauls the batteries in these things, we sadly can’t recommend them, as much as we love Yamaha.

Following on from that theme, you’ll want an underwater scooter with a good battery, because underwater propulsion is hard on the motor, and that means the motor is going to need a reliable battery or your battery will just fizzle out after a few months.

Finally, for general use and snorkeling, it’s nice to have a positive buoyancy, but really it’s down it’s down to personal preference whether you want one that has a positive buoyancy or neutral buoyancy.

If you’re using it mostly for diving – and especially extended diving sessions – then you’re definitely going to want a neutral buoyancy, or you’ll be floating upwards slightly all the time instead of staying where you want to be.

Best Underwater Scooter: Windek Sublue Seabow

Best Underwater Scooter

Windek Sublue Seabow

A pretty quiet and very well-made underwater scooter with a 60-75 minute battery life under normal use and a top speed of 4.47 mph.

That’s as fast as the men’s 200m freestyle world champion.

Check Price

Really, this is just a quality product that just feels right when you use it.

No wishing it was faster, or wishing you’d gone with one that has a better battery life.

What We Like:

  • Waterproof Battery – Although the battery compartment itself isn’t waterproof, it doesn’t need to be. Yep. That means you can swap the battery out underwater.

Best for Kids, Families and Pool Use: Windek Sublue WhiteShark Mix

Best for Kids, Families and Pool Use

Windek Sublue WhiteShark Mix

It’s compact, easy to use, only 7.7 lbs and its battery is entirely waterproof.

It’s ideal for kids and parents who want to have fun playing around or even exploring the ocean with a sea scooter, without breaking the bank.

Check Price

You can get around 30 minutes of usage at full speed out of this one, but that’s fine, because the maximum speed is 3.35 miles per hour.

That’s still significantly faster than most underwater scooters out there, except for our top pick of course, which costs almost twice as much as this one.

As you can see, it’s not just limited to pool use either. It’s very well-suited to scuba diving too.

What We Like:

  • High Quality – Being in the same Windek Sublue underwater scooter range as our top pick, it shares a lot of features with it… but this one is for a different price point:
  • It’s Almost Half the Price of Our Top Pick – If you’re looking more for something that’s “fun for all the family” and extended diving sessions aren’t what you’re getting a sea scooter for, then this is the one to go for. Being basically half the price, you can get two so you can sea-scoot together.

The maximum depth of the Geneinno S2 is 30m, and it can be used at sea temperatures between 0-40 ℃.

What We Like:

  • 2-Mile Range at Max Speed – This sea scooter can go for two miles in 45 minutes on a full battery
  • Anti-Rust Coating on the Motors – Great for longevity. After all, those motors are going to have to handle a whole lot of water exposure.

Other Worthy Mentions

These ones didn’t quite make it into our top picks list, but they’re still definitely worth a look, because some of them have some pretty interesting features.

Aquarobotman MagicJet

4mph top speed, and you can actually combine two of these together with the bundle to make a pretty powerful dual-thruster underwater scooter.

TUSA SAV-7 Underwater Scooter

Expensive, but it can propel three divers at once with a max depth of 230 feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are underwater scooters environmentally friendly?

Despite how they look, underwater scooters aren’t powered by an engine.

They’re basically a waterproof motor attached to a battery, so whether they’re truly eco friendly to use or not depends on the source of your electricity.

They definitely won’t pollute the environment though, which makes them far better than boats which use engines.

Do underwater scooters scare away fish and other marine wildlife?

A lot of them do, because the spinning motor tends to distirb the water around it if it’s not designed to run quietly and smoothly.

As you’d expect though, the best underwater scooters out there tend to be much quieter, to the point of not scaring fish away more than you would do already with your presence there.

Can kids use underwater scooters?

Not the huge, super heavy ones that are more like underwater motorcycles, but the ones that can be held in your hand for sure.

Some designs of underwater scooter are definitely more suited for kids than others though, so be sure to get something that’s safe your kids to use.
